Most of the coffee farmers (approx. 100,000) in Honduras only have small cultivation plots and have to travel a long way to process and sell their coffee. Many of them make their living mostly from growing coffee. An unproductive year or crop failures caused by climate change can have devastating consequences for the families.
La Laguna belongs to the district of Concepción del Norte in northwestern Honduras. Beneficio, the local coffee processing facility complete with a small village shop, is located above the village. The goal of the project is to enable 300 local farmers to prepare and dry their coffee beans there. This joint processing should improve the quality of the coffee and offer the farmers better future prospects.
This project teaches the farmers how to improve the quality and yield of their coffee beans thanks to professional farm management and environment-friendly cultivation and harvest methods, how to lower their production cost and protect the environment and thereby obtain a better and more stable income. Thanks to our investment in the Beneficio infrastructure, the farmers can have their coffee cherries prepared directly on site. This means that they are no longer dependent on the - often corrupt - coffee dealers in the faraway city. This is how they save money, time and long, arduous journeys. The Beneficio's professional and water-sparing processing facility makes sure that the coffee beans have the required quality.
The supply chain is completely transparent thanks to the direct partnership between us, the exporter and the La Laguna farmers. Unnecessary intermediaries are eliminated, the farmers treated fairly and paid correctly.
